2018 A Cappella Video Awards: Our Favorite Group Type Nominees

The A Cappella Video Awards are currently in their second year and feature 114 nominees across 23 awards in three categories: special awards nominations, group type nominations, and group nominations.

Winners will be announced LIVE on FloVoice at the 2018 Los Angeles A Cappella Festival on February 11, 2018.

Let's begin with some of our favorites among the Group Type nominations.

Best Video by a Professional Group: "Workin My Way to You" by Rockapella

Rockappella have been on a roll recently. This new video is tight, fun, and showcases everything that has given Rockappella such a long career.

Runner Up: "Freedom" by D-Fi

Best Video by a CAL Group: "Last Christmas" by AfterParty

The Contemporary A Cappella League (CAL) always puts forth quality material, and it’s awesome to see these groups pushing hard into videos. The UK's AfterParty leads the pack here in my mind, with a great version of “Last Christmas.” Keep these coming!

Runner Up: "Love Is Love" Levels of Vocal Expression

Best High School Video: "People" by Vocal Rush (Oakland School for the Arts)

High school groups making this level of video blows our mind every year. These groups are all at the top of their respective games, and these videos show it. Vocal Rush may very well take this one, with their amazing video of “People.”

This track was recorded by Corey Slutsky of Voices Only as part of the 2016 National A Cappella Convention prize.

Runner-Up: "Sun" OneVoice (Briarcrest Christian School)

Best Female Collegiate Video: "Girls Just Want To Have Fun(damental Rights)" The Oxford Belles (University of Oxford)

There must be something in the water in the UK. The videos coming out of there are incredible, and we were blown away by "Girls Just Want To Have Fun(damental Rights)" by the Oxford Belles. We hadn’t seen this video before the noms were released, and it’s immediately become a favorite.

This is a clear leader in this strong field.

Runner-Up: "The Sound of Musicals" Bluebelles (Exeter University, UK)

Best Male Collegiate Video: "7/11" Semi-Toned (Exeter University, UK)

This is a hotly contested video category this year. Again, we're going to go with a UK group here, Semi-Toned, from Exeter University, with their "7/11" video. It’s an amazing piece of media, and it shows in its multiple nominations across the awards.

Runner Up: "Dirty Work" All the King's Men (King's College London)

Best Mixed Collegiate Video: "Bad Blood" Faux Paz (University of Maryland)

Rounding out the last collegiate category is a strong showing by all the mixed groups represented here. Our favorite by a slim margin is “Bad Blood’ by Faux Paz. Having had the pleasure of seeing them live several times, it’s fantastic to see them transition that incredible focus and talent to video.

Runner Up: "Thrill of the Uptown Freak" Cadenza (University of Cambridge)

That's It For Part 1!

Who do you think will leave LAAF with an AVA?
