The A Cappella Video Awards are currently in their second year and feature 114 nominees across 23 awards in three categories: special awards nominations, group type nominations, and genre nominations.
Winners will be announced LIVE on FloVoice at the 2018 Los Angeles A Cappella Festival on Feb. 11, 2018.
Let's continue with some of our favorites among the Genre nominations!
Best Electronic / Experimental Video: "Cold Weather" by Pentatonix
We love love love this category, and the creativity it inspires. Also, we're not sure anything in any category can compete with PTX’s “Coldest Winter” though. It’s just too good.
Runner Up: "Baltic Song" by TimbreTone
Best Folk / World Video: "Desert Rose" by Peter Hollens & Allaa Wardi
Peter Hollens is where he is because he always does something for everyone, leaving no genre unturned. “Desert Rose” is a perfect example of why he’s successful. Amazing video.
Runner Up: "Other Plans" by Coco's Lunch
Best Hip-Hop Video: "Shadowboxing" by Drums of War
Drums of War was another new group to us in these nominations, and we were blown away. Their sound can be sparse, yes but it’s tight, and this video hits hard. The mood of the video is incredible and it’s executed in a way that accents the music perfectly.
Runner Up: "Guillotine" by m-pact
Best Holiday Video: "Carol of the Bells" by Peter Hollens & Friends
Peter Hollens is also a master of gathering artists together for something that might seem like a logistical impossibility, but just works. His collaboration with singers from BYU sends out the holiday spirit in a warm, happy way. It helps that their version of one of the all-time classic holiday songs is immaculately done.
Runner Up: "La La Passover" by Y-Studs A Cappella (Yeshiva University)
Best Humor Video: "La La Passover" by Y-Studs A Cappella (Yeshiva University)
We enjoy that many, many groups don’t take themselves too seriously, and we love the humorous content that pops up on occasion. “La La Passover” by the Y-Studs is *hilarous* and had us chortling from start to finish. This is a deep field, and all of the videos are worth checking out!
Runner Up: "Shape of You" by Peter Hollens ft. Anthony Vincent
Best Jazz Video: "Sorry" by NoVI
Jazz is all about mood and groove, and sometimes that’s hard to get across with visuals. All 3 of the nominees have succeeded here, and this category was especially hard to pick a winner, but NoVI takes it by a hair. They just effuse vibe and groove, in everything they do, and especially in “Sorry.”
Runner Up: "When I Fall In Love" by Sambaranda
Best Pop Video: "Imagine" by Pentatonix
The most hotly contested category of the awards. Unfortunately for everyone else, PTX grabbed a nod here too, and they’re an immovable force in this genre. Their industry-backed releases, including just can’t be beaten in many areas.
Runner Up: "Guillotine" by m-pact
Best R&B Video: "7/11" by Semi-Toned
Two groups in this category grabbed a number of nods for their videos in this year’s awards, and this one is difficult. Both videos are incredible and either would be an excellent selection, but we're giving it to Semi-Toned.
Runner Up: "Bad Blood" by Faux Paz
Best Religious Video: "Sun" by OneVoice
Could OneVoice be any more diverse in their abilities? Those kids are so talented, it’s hard to believe… but here it is, in video form, undeniable. Their version of “Sun” exemplifies this category with the feelings it evokes from the watcher.
Runner Up: "It Is Well with My Soul" by Vocal Point (Brigham Young University)
Best Rock Video: "Tribute to Linkin Park and Chester Bennington" by Peter Hollens
This was one of our favorite categories to review, since we think that actual rock music is often overlooked or hard to get to via the a cappella style. All of these videos are pure mood. We’ve gotta give the nod to Peter again, with his Linkin Park tribute. It is timely and evocative, and gets at the heart of rock.
Runner Up: "They Don't Care About Us" D-Fi
Best Show Tunes / Soundtrack / Theme Song: "Beauty and the Beast Medley" by BYU Vocal Point ft. Lexi Walker
This is a newer category across the board in the a cappella awards world, and it’s amazing to see the variety present here. Our pick neatly bookends this article, with Vocal Point’s Beauty and the Beast Medley is just too good. It’s an achievement, and their multiple nominations show it.
Runner Up: "Westworld Theme" by Chris Rupp
Who do you think will leave LAAF with an AVA?!
