Midwest Dynasties Emerge Ahead Of ICCA Semifinals

Are new scholastic dynasties on the rise in the Midwest? Of the region's 10 ICCA semifinalists, only six schools are being represented at Washington University in St. Louis on March 10.
The deep and talented field is highlighted by multiple groups from Ball State, Saint Louis University, Missouri State, and Ohio State University that will be vying for a trip to finals in New York in April.
Carmony
Ohio State University at Lima
Quarterfinal Score: 399
Only 6 years old, Carmony presented a set at quarterfinals that the nearly broke 400 points. The group's performance also earned an Outstanding Vocal Percussion award for Collin Hoffman and an Outstanding Choreography honor for Shaun Basinger and Adam Wheelbarger for their entire set.
Kent Clarks
Kent State University
Quarterfinal Score: 356
The first contemporary a cappella group on the Kent State campus, The Kent Clarks, put on a great second-place performance at quarterfinals. Cameron Clemens earned Outstanding Soloist honors for his performance on “Icarus.”
Sedoctave
Ball State University
Quarterfinal Score: 427
After two years of placing third, Sedoctive tallied an incredibly solid score to finally capture first place at quarterfinals. The victory was highlighted by Michael Hassel's recognition for Outstanding Arrangement for his arrangement of “It Don’t Mean A Thing.”
Unexpected Resolution

Quarterfinal Score: 333
In their signature all green, the men from Ball State sing all the best hits all the way back to 1830.
Beyond All Reason
Saint Louis University
Quarterfinal Score: 359
Edging out their classmates at SLU by just four points, the ladies of Beyond All Reason aren’t new to the ICCA stage. They bested their 2017 third-place finish at quarterfinals and will be a force to be reckoned with at semifinals.
The Bare Naked Statues

Quarterfinal Score: 355
They just missed first place, but The Bare Naked Statues received Outstanding Choreography for Daniel Ditch and Will Higgins’ work on the entire set.
The Hibernotes
Missouri State University
Quarterfinal Score: 383
The Hibernotes’ performance of “Skydiving” won two awards at quarterfinals, with Taylor Haverstick receiving Outstanding Solo and Victoria Dickson getting Outstanding Arrangement. Kadey Copeland was also honored with Outstanding Choreography for the whole set.
The Beartones
Missouri State University
Quarterfinal Score: 363
Now in their 18th year, The Beartones are familiar faces at ICCA quarterfinal and semifinal competitions.
Buck That!
Ohio State University
Quarterfinal Score: 408
Buck That! won a nail-biter, edging out its classmates and 2017 ICCA finalists, The Ohio State of Mind, by just five points. In addition to first place, the group also took home Outstanding Choreography for the entire set.

The reigning Midwest champion and ICCA finalist didn’t let up with a close second-place finish at quarterfinals, which included Outstanding Soloist for Cayla Kass’ performance of Love So Soft and last year’s ICCA Finals Outstanding Bass, Jojo Otseidu, winning Outstanding Arrangement for the entire set.
