Your A Cappella Group Was Eliminated From A Competition: Now What?

This weekend will mark the end of quarterfinals for all but one region in the 2018 ICHSA and ICCA season. As many groups prepare to move on to semifinals, there are even more groups whose seasons have ended. After weeks and even months of serious preparation and focus on competition, what happens when it’s over?
Here are several ways to make the most of the rest of your year with these productive, fun, and perhaps even palette-cleansing activities!
Record Your Set
Even if you didn’t get the highest scores, your competition set represents some of your very best work. Grab a camera and/or some microphones and get that magic preserved for all time!
Taking the time to sing it after your competition streak is over will mean less stress and pressure, so you might even get a better result.
Take it from all a cappella alumni — you’ll miss these moments and having something to look back on, or just to post for some #TBT giggles will be time, money, and effort well spent.
Make Some Videos
Music videos are way easier and cheaper to make than they used to be. You can make this project as simple or as in-depth as you and the group have time and motivation for!
Whether you sing live on a couch or in the quad to an iPhone or you take the time to put together a scripted video to a studio recording, there is tons of fun to be had!
Go On A Tour
Touring is a great way to bond, share your music with the world, and make the most of your scholastic singing experience.
Sure, a two-week tour through Asia is awesome (and expensive and planning intensive), but you don’t have to go big or go home. Taking a weekend to travel to a city you can drive to can give your group a boost of fun and a lifetime of memories.
Do A Non-Singing Group Activity
The clock’s no longer running on your competition prep time. Your group members are almost guaranteed to be interested in something other than just singing. Take a break from rehearsal and spend the afternoon playing laser tag or conquering an escape room or even just a lunch or dinner outing. Lifelong friendships thrive on a little variety.
Learn Some New Rep
Chances are you spent many weeks drilling the same couple of songs. Treat yourself to something new and shiny for renewed motivation and a breath of fresh air.
Record A Single
No need to dive into a full album — that’s jumping from one grueling project to another. However, a single can be a fun, quick, nearly-instant gratification achievement to keep your group on a post-competition high.
Bring In New Friends for A Concert
You know all those new awesome groups you met at your competition? The fun doesn’t need to end because the competition did!
Invite them to your campus to perform with you. You get to have more fun, your fans get to see new groups, and they get some new fans.
It’s a triple win. Double that if they invite you back.
Do A Community Service Project
Whether you incorporate singing or not, giving back is never a bad way to spend your time. You’ve already got a built-in team that knows how to work together. Use those loving musical spirits to lift someone’s day and expand the group experience in a new way.
Do A Fundraiser
Singing is a great way to raise money — especially if you are giving it to a community in need. Find a cause that is near and dear to your heart, grab some other local groups, and put on a show. Handing over money to something you care about gives new meaning to the word "life-changing."
Did you get one or more of these done? Great.
Now, go look at your competition videos, scores, and comments and get ready for next year.
