5 Former Finalists To Compete At ICCA Great Lakes Semifinals

Top groups from Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin will head to Chicago on March 17 for what’s set to be a spectacular ICCA Great Lakes Semifinal. The lineup includes five former finalists and deep-seated talent from some of the strongest scholastic a cappella programs in the country.

Voices in Your Head

University of Chicago

Quarterfinal Score: 378

No stranger to competition, this group is known for innovative and completely reimagined arrangements. Competitors in ICCA since 2009 and second-place finishers at finals in 2017, Voices in Your Head has received tons of other accolades, including RARB Album of the Year, CARAs, and features on all major a cappella compilations.

The Undertones

Northwestern University

Quarterfinal Score: 337

Recent performers at the White House, this group last appeared at semifinals in 2015. With a penchant for silliness and fun, The Undertones won over the audiences and the judges for second place in the quarterfinals. Outstanding Soloist of the night went to Lucy Godinez for “Taking Chances.”

No Comment A Cappella

University of Illinois

Quarterfinal Score: 425

A 2013 finalist and star group of the 2015 Pop TV series "Sing It On," No Comment A Cappella is a regular feature on ICCA stages. Leading the Great Lakes with the highest quarterfinal score, the group earned Outstanding Choreography and Trent Calderone won Outstanding Arrangement for the entire set.

Secondary Dominance

Illinois State University

Quarterfinal Score: 338

Taking pride in delighting audiences since their inception in 2004, these versatile singers put on a strong set in the quarterfinals, led by Marissa Gollogly's Outstanding Soloist  performance for “In the Name of Love.”

Amazin’ Blue

University of Michigan

Quarterfinal Score: 357

Recently hitting 30 years as a group, Amazin’ Blue added to its long list of honors in the quarterfinals, making it the University of Michigan’s most decorated group. Amazin’ Blue's first-place set included Outstanding Arrangement by Grant Rossi and Jake Smith and Outstanding Choreography by Mason Van Gieson for the entire set.

The Michigan G-Men

University of Michigan

Quarterfinal Score: 333

Just wrapping up a nine-day tour, The Michigan G-Men are instantly recognizable in their blue jerseys. This will be the group’s first appearance in semifinals since its incredible three-year streak at finals from 2013-15, where the G-Men's last performance earned them third place and Outstanding Vocal Percussion.

State of Fifths

Michigan State University

Quarterfinal Score: 366

Nearing its 10-year anniversary, this group of undergraduates recently added a quarterfinal championship to its list of accolades. Michael Dawson won Outstanding Vocal Percussion for his performance across the entire set.

Euphoria

Grand Valley State University

Quarterfinal Score: 349

Recently announced as competitors in the BOSS Scholastic Competition, Euphoria is in store for a busy spring. This is the group's second year in a row on the semifinal stage. Euphoria will also soon be releasing its first-ever EP — not a bad way to celebrate 12 years!

Purple Haze

Northwestern University

Quarterfinal Score: 396

Committed to competing every other year, Purple Haze returned from a 2016 semifinals appearance to place first at this season's quarterfinal. Outside of competing, the group does extensive touring both domestically and internationally and shares its music (and love of purple) with as much of the Chicago area as possible.

Fundamentally Sound

University of Wisconsin, Madison

Quarterfinal Score: 366

Known for its suspenders, outsized personalities, and charm, Fundamentally Sound took home second place and two special awards for their entire set at quarterfinals: Zach Zimmermann for Outstanding Vocal Percussion and Daniel Viveros for Outstanding Choreography.
