Summer is almost over on Cape Cod, and we have to say goodbye to sunshine, beach days, and Cape Harmony, Cape Cod's professional all-female a cappella group, until next year.
For the women of Cape Harmony, ending the summer is bittersweet.
"We never want to leave the Cape after the summer is over," Mackenzie Cohn of Cape Harmony said. "But I feel fortunate to have had this experience and excited to see the group continue to grow."
Cape Harmony is comprised of 10 women ages 19 to 23 from around the country who live, work, and play together from June to August.
"It's hard to describe a typical day with Cape Harmony because there isn't one," Annie Healy said. "Some days we wake up at 8am, rehearse, sing on the streets of Hyannis and put out a bucket. Other days, we sing at a 75th birthday party or go to schools and sing for the kids. After a long day of singing, we snuggle up in the living room and watch America's Next Top Model. Then we do it all again."
Some girls will be heading back to award-winning collegiate a cappella groups, including 2017 ICCA champion The Nor'Easters, University of Delaware Vocal Point, NYU N'Harmonics, Berklee Upper Structure, and the BU Treblemakers.
Others are bringing the skills they learned from running a business like Cape Harmony to life after college.
"Cape Harmony is so special because it empowers its members to grow as both strong women and performers," Cape Harmony business manager Sarah Miller said. "Through working, singing, and learning together, the group develops an incredible bond with one another and transforms from a singing group into a family.
